Location
This photo was taken in December 2016 whilst visiting the Addo Elephant Park on the Eastern side of South Africa. Being summertime this region is renowned for dry and hot daytime temperatures resulting in a lot of activity around watering holes.Time
Believe it or not, this was taken mid-day on the 15th of December, the wrong time by all means of the imagination - why would anyone want to be sitting at a watering hole at this time of the day, there's nothing golden about this hour!Lighting
Just a bright hot sunny day, light was scorching, sun straight up midway in the sky - everything goes against the grain when coming to photographic advice - then there is the rule, "break them" and see what you get - this rule was broken and you now see what the outcome was!Equipment
Yet again my faithful Canon EOS 50D, Tamron SP 150~600 F/5-6.3 Di VC USD. Rest was the vehicle window with bean-bag, no flash.Inspiration
There was a lot of elephant action around this waterhole, there were adult elephant totally submerging themselves in the muddy but cool waters, this with some sort of frenzy as to who could totally submerge themselves, mother and calf became separated due to this excitement, what you see in this photo is the happy reunion of mother and calf.Editing
Yes there were Lightroom adjustments, cropping, sizing and general adjustments, and finally contrast and clarity. In my camera bag
As a wildlife photographer in Africa I carry quite a lot of gear, my two camera's are the Canon 7DMkII and my old faithful 50D, as to lens's, I have the Canon EFS 10~18, the EF 28~70L 2.8, the EF 70~200 f2.8L IS II, the Canon 100~400 f2.8L II, and the Tamron SP 150~600 Di (used here). Added to this is the Canon 100 f2.8 L IS USM Macro and a EFS 18~135 purely for video. Then a couple of other lenses for the occasion. The rest is normal stuff, tripod, flash, TC's etc.Feedback
I always say patience is what makes the photographer, in wildlife photography you very seldom "choose" your photo, it most often presents itself to you, you shoot and what you get you get, but not so much the case here. In wildlife photography there is no posing, no positioning, just that which you have at that moment, the light may not work for you, the position may not work for you, your equipment may also at that moment not work for you - you make the most out of the situation, and yes, always enjoy the occasion.
