Location
This was taken during a dust storm at the Kgalagadi National Park which boarders Namibia in 2016.Time
This photo was taken late afternoon, the sun was hidden due to the dust storm making it somewhat difficult to focus on the subject.Lighting
This was a fantastic photo opportunity as these two males where mating with a lioness (which is out of view in this photo), and they hung around for over an hour, the situation became more dramatic as the storm approached resulting in them eventually retreating into the bush for cover against the rain which started plummeting down.Equipment
This was taken with a Canon 7DMkii in burst mode, the lens used was the Tamron SP 150~600 shot at f/6.3 at 1/20th. Nothing else, hand held with beanbag taken through the window of the vehicle.Inspiration
Did not have much of a choice, it was all being served up as it went, the dust, the effect of this in terms of light and clarity, the movement of the subjects, it became a simple action of point and shoot and hoping for the best.Editing
Yes, Lightroom, cropped the photo, turned up the clarity, sharpness & vibrance and adjusted dehaze just a little. In my camera bag
As a wildlife photographer in Africa I carry quite a lot of gear, my two camera's are the Canon 7DMkII and my old faithful my 50D, as to lens's I have the Canon EFS 10~18, the EF 28~70L 2.8, the EF 70~200 f2.8L IS Mk11 and the Tamron 150~600. Added to this is the Canon 100 f2.8 L IS USM Macro and a EFS 18~135 purely for video. Then a couple of other lenses for the occasion. The rest is normal stuff, tripod, flash etc.Feedback
Wildlife photo shooting is not easy, but relaxing and fun! Most often it would take hours just hanging around a waterhole or plain waiting for animals to arrive, and if lucky something out of the ordinary will happen, it's here that you need to be ready for action. Burst mode, which the 7D Mkii is perfect at is a must, thing happen fast and you need to keep the trigger down and simply follow the action - yes you discard plenty but stuck in between is the odd gem worth keeping. Perseverance and Patience.
