Location
Took this picture whilst visiting the Kruger National Park in South Africa over December 2015, very dry and very hot, resulting in an arid a dusty environment!Time
If I recall, this was around mid morning, the heat was starting to show, the animals were coming around for their second drink given the heat of the day, they come in separate groups, each challenging the other for their place at the waterhole.Lighting
It was bright but crisp, the mid morning sun was behind me and allowed for some relief, light reflection was on my side and allowed for the effect on the dust cloud created by the three Wildebeest.Equipment
This was taken on my good old faithful Canon 50D ( what a camera, if you have one never get rid of it)), lens used was the Tamron SP 150~600 shot at f/7.1 at 1/60th, blur gave the effect of action, sacrificing clarity, had to make a choice and feel this was the right one. Nothing else hand held with beanbag..Inspiration
Ah who knows, life is choices, you take that given you, in wildlife photography you very seldom "choose" your photo, it most often presents itself, you shoot and what you get you get - this is photography on the go, no posing, no positioning, just served at the moment.Editing
Very little on this one, some highlights & shadows and jacked-up the clarity to give presence, a little vignetting to create drama. In my camera bag
As a wildlife photographer in Africa I carry quite a lot of gear, my two camera's are the Canon 7DMkII and my old faithful my 50D, as to lens's I have the Canon EFS 10~18, the EF 28~70L 2.8, the EF 70~200 f2.8L IS then the Tamron 150~600. Added to this is the Canon 100 f2.8 L IS USM Macro and a EFS 18~135 purely for video. Then a couple of other lenses for the occasion. The rest is normal stuff, tripod, flash etc.Feedback
As always, I suppose it's 9 parts luck and 1 part planning, perhaps the best advice I have is, ALWAYS have a camera on hand, who knows what gets served up, so best be ready!
