I was out early one winter morning and just managed to capture the gull after it had dipped into the river. I loved the way the early sunlight was just coming through the trees, warming the top of the picture whereas the lower part remained cooler colours

Location
The photo was taken just a short walk from my home, very early one winter morning. I wanted to capture the frost in the rising sunlight. I was wrapped up against the cold and had a steep hill to descend so didn't take a tripod.Time
This has to be my all time favourite image, a real case of being in the right place at the right time! Well worth getting up early for!Lighting
The sun was just coming over the brow of the hill so lighting the tops of the trees giving them a lovely warm colour contrasting with the cold in the valley around the riverEquipment
My trusty Nikon D5100 with a 55-300mm telephoto lens, no tripod, flash or filtersInspiration
I wanted to capture the beauty of the frosty morning and the textures and light , the gull rising from the river was a bonus!Editing
I adjusted the contrast, used a little HDR effect with Picasa to enhance the textures and slight lomo and Orton effect to give the image a little more depthIn my camera bag
I carry my Nikon D5100, Nikon J2 and Olympus TG-1 as well as filters, spare batteries, spare SD cards and my tripod or monopod when I can, if I have the car nearby, but due to arthritis I have to restrict how much I carry. I've recently started using a Nikon Coolpix P900 because I wanted the good zoom for wildlife.Feedback
Always be ready for the unexpected and don't miss the moment! If I had been looking away I'd have missed the gull which would have made the image much less complete. I practise Mindful Photography so try to connect with my subject and remain very much in the moment rather than getting caught up on overthinking my shots. It also pays to know your location really well for times of sunrise, direction of light, conditions such as ground/hoar frost, mist etc.
