Behind The Lens

Location

At the remains of the Eucla Pier, Western Australia. After trekking over the sand dunes this abandoned pier is standing there on it's own. A strong storm had blown a lot of seaweed up onto the shore. The cormorants have used this as a resting platform for a long time. Used to having their peace undisturbed. An equally good spot to be able to watch the depth of water for their food supply. While standing beside the pier it is apparent the effort involved to create this structure. Which now stands as a monument to times past, left for those who are prepared to make the journey over the dunes, for this sight. Yes it was worth it.

Time

About 9.30 in the morning. After the walk over the dunes, to arrive at this white beach with no-one around, you can imagine a sailing ship coming along the coast to deliver goods to the the telegraph station. Also in ruins, another monument to the labours of times past.

Lighting

Try and avoid any lens flare from the surfaces. Use shadows where possible to create depth in the image. Having all the colours one shade will make a bland image. So use the light to create form, this allows our eyes to create shapes in our images. Giving us length, shape, size, dimension. Use this to create interest in your images.

Equipment

450D with a 70-200L lens, polarizing filter. Handheld.

Inspiration

The fact that this jetty is standing still, no longer used. With the colours of the sea and sky contrasting with the beach sand. Having the cormorants taking off at regular intervals completed the essence of life in action. Being there in the view of times and trials past gives a sense of history still standing. Otherwise no modern day conveniences in sight, almost an untouched part of the world. Although the cormorants appeared curious they went about their normal activities without concern. Seemed so much an uncluttered part of life. Just a peaceful, restful sight.

Editing

Small basic adjustments, some sharpening.

In my camera bag

Canon450D 50mm, 18-55mm kit lens, 55-250mm kit lens, 70-200L lens, Muse Lensbaby, tripod. Assorted polarizing filters.

Feedback

Take you time to compose your image, where possible show what the purpose of the subject is. Just having a crisp clear image is not always enough. Create the image to give a sense of life, to the image. Cause the viewers eyes to travel through the image, not just glance across it. Does your image have a sense of emotion to it? Will it inspire the viewer to want to go there themselves, to capture their own image of that subject? Make the viewer wonder what it would be like to stand behind the camera and look at that view, get that shot themselves. Is there somewhere close for me to do something similar? How will my image appear?
