What and amazing portrait it is. I love these expressions and Peek a boo hand positioning showing me the inner child of this old age. Wonderful .

Location
This photo was made in a portable home studio that I fashioned out of PVC pipe and wind sails. The light bounces off the back of the light box, giving a north light.Time
I made my Ma's portrait during my coffee break time; When my mom stops over to visit, I take a break from working in my darkroom, and we have coffee, and I make home made pretzels. During this break-time I had the studio set up, and had asked my mom to pose for me.Lighting
The lighting is from the old Kodak school of photography, whose philosophy was called "bumper pool lighting." My studio light is made out of PVC pipes from Home Depot. I use sail cloths that a seamstress made to fit my studio equipment set up.Equipment
For this photograph, I used a gitzo carbon fiber mono-pod. Photogenic mono lights using Infrared Remotes. My camera was a Nikon D810, with an 18 to 24 f/3.5 lens.Inspiration
I enjoy photographing my mother. Her and I go back to the time when I was in college first learning the photography ropes and skill sets to become a photographer.Editing
The image was raw, so I did the basic photographic tool-kit using Photoshop. Tweak the curves. In my camera bag
Depending on where I'm photographing determines my equipment. I love my 4x5 large format camera, and the slow and methodical challenge it poses for landscapes, and Kodak Tri-X film that I tray process in my darkroom. The Digital camera I use is a Nikon D810, and I also use a Nikon Cool pic P7100. A modified Pentax spot meter, filters to work with tones, and a audio recorder to make notes of the scene I am photographing; a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and a thermos of coffee rounds things out. Most all the time I will make a photograph, and wait to see if sometime better will happen (Light-wise) before I break down.Feedback
Patience and a sense of humor makes a photographer. Allow your subjects, and sitters to express themselves. Work with the external to realize the internal. We all have a story, and something to share. For the photo of my ma, she wanted to look at me. A playful side of her came out.
