Behind The Lens

Location

This is a location shot I love to use because it has a fair amount of water for reflections and both low and high key areas for backgrounds. Serena is an amazing young model who is completely professional. I have worked with her several times and have amazing images from every session.

Time

I have learned to work with any time of day. I have found areas which allow me to use full sun to full shade throughout the day. This image was taken mid afternoon.

Lighting

This was taken at the opening of a tunnel below a train track. By placing Serena near the end of the tunnel I was able to get the skylight (almost studio light) and still have a low key background.

Equipment

I use a Canon EOS 6D with a 70-200 L on a monopod. I always use a monopod for ease of use and it gives me about a 1 stop advantage when in low light situations. No flash used.

Inspiration

The model takes me to a place and when working the clothing and background move me to the image. I do not pose my models but rather let them express the feelings of who they are and their integration into the environment we are working.

Editing

I always do some post production to create an image. I seldom take an image directly from camera. I am very particular about keeping an image very natural. I personally do not like to be able to have the viewer see the photoshop work but to have them assume it came directly from camera.

In my camera bag

One or two camera bodies, a 24-70 L lens (2.8) and a 70-200 L (2.8). If I am using flash I am very old school and use a Metz 45 on a bracket. The rest is just misc.

Feedback

Try not to be a photographer who wants to control the situation. Look carefully at the model, her choice of clothing and location to move you in a direction. My clients always have complete control of what we do or do not shoot. If a model is comfortable with the session they will give you an amazing part of themselves. All my sessions unfold and take on their own life.
