I knew the horses and riders would become silhouettes so I needed to make sure the shapes were recognized. Making sure you can see all 4 legs on the horses was most important and then waited until the composition was appealing.Equipment
Canon 5D, Canon 70-200mm. Gitzo Tripod with Really Right Stuff Ball head usuing a cable release.Inspiration
I was in a photo workshop called “A Day at the Ranch” where we photographed the horses and cowboys at work and in some cases like this working as models for us. I took a number of different shots it when the dog ran into the frame, it added more to the story I was trying to tell.Editing
I shoot in RAW format and use Adobe Lightroom to process my photos. I had to make sure the horses, riders and dog were dark silhouettes and then I added a bit of saturation to the sky.In my camera bag
Canon 5D (full frame for landscapers), Canon 7D ( for wildlife), lenses: 16-35, 24-105, and either a 70-200 or 100-400 depending on what I am shooting. Cable release, polarizer, 1,2, and 3 Stop graduated ND filters, 10 and 6 Stop ND Filters, 1.4x extender, extra batteries and cards,A small point and shoot infrared camera and a headlamp.Feedback
Position yourself where your subjects are between you and the sun. Expose for the background . Don’t worry that the subjects are really dark, that is what you want. After that, it is all about the shapes of your subject that will make the better photograph. You need to make sure your viewers will recognize what the shapes represent. Make all the legs of your primary subjects are showing it really makes a difference!
