Location
This was taken on the beach in Santa Monica, CA. I was with a small group of dancers and we were shooting on and around the beach. The light was just starting to fade and Bridget Whitman, the dancer featured in this photo, jumped into. the air blocking the sun. I knew that if I timed it right, I could capture a silhouette of her backlit by the setting sun. I moved my position and angle to where it would put me at the right angle and captured this shot. I immediately knew that we had it!Time
This was shot in August sometime around 7 pm. We knew the light was going to be gone soon, so these were some of the last shots of the day.Lighting
I had this shot fully composed in my head before I clicked the shutter. The light was beautiful and there was no reason to add off-camera flash. I already knew I wanted her silhouetted and adding light to her would have been distracting. This is all natural light and the photo looked just like this in the camera viewfinder.Equipment
This was a Sony A7ii with a Sony/Zeiss 24/70 F4 lens. It was shot hand held with no additional lighting.Inspiration
I love shooting movement, but dancers and performers are the most fun! Getting to anticipate their speed and direction and knowing the exact moment to get the shot you want is always exhilarating!Editing
I didn't need to do any post processing to this photo. It looked like this in camera. In my camera bag
If I am shooting digital I am generally using a Sony A7Riii with either a Sony/Zeiss Distagon 35mm lens or a Sony G-Master 24/70 F2.8 lens. I do have other lenses that I bring to specific shoots and I know I am going to need a wider lens or something longer, but. the 24/70 and the 35mm are the two lenses that are almost always in my bag,Feedback
To get something like this they key is to adjust your camera settings for the background minus the sun. The key to this photo is framing the shot so that the subject completely blocks out the sun. If you get any direct sun in your shot you will end up with blown highlights.
