Location
On a winter expedition through the Arctic circle of Sweden Norway and Finland as we traveled towards Nordkapp we spent the cold dark and snowy winter nights cosy in our van. This photo is from central/northern Sweden.Time
On this night as we sat in the snow surrounded by the silent forest and frozen lakes it was overcast and had been snowing heavily for the past three days! This made the sky even darker and more dramatic, so instead of taking photos of the northern lights, I jumped out of the van at about 11pm and set the shutter to 30 seconds slightly lighting up the van with a head torch. Sitting in complete silence at beyond -20c in the middle of nowhere in the deep snow was a magical experience. I was glad to get back into my warm van and sit next to the woodstove with a hot chocolate after shooting photos outside in the cold. And also glad we had good winter summer off-road tires on our van to drive through the deep snow the next morning!Lighting
One of my goals this winter was to capture what it’s like to live in a van in such harsh conditions. But to also show how cosy and warm you can be while surrounded by such cold harsh conditions.Equipment
Only my small mirrorless Cannon G7xii and a small rolleli tripod as well as a cheap headlamp to light the van.Inspiration
I wanted to mimic the photos you see of tents sitting in the snow with the warm glow of light from inside the tent glowing all around. but instead of a tent it’s my cosy self converted adventure van/full time home on wheels.Editing
Using Lightroom to enhance the focal point on the van and also add a slightl teal and orange hue to make the light from the van look more orange and cosy as the wood stove was on, and to make the snow and trees look colder. I also added a slight vignette to the image as well as sharpening around the front of the icy frozen van.In my camera bag
Only my G7xii and a tripod right now. I’m still saving up for a lot more gear.Feedback
Just get out there and play with the equipment that you already have! In the end of the day you can have all the expensive gear in the world but if you never get out there and explore new undiscovered locations, and have unforgettable adventures then you won’t have those opertunities to capture that perfect shot you’ve always wanted that makes people want to know more about the story behind the image. It doesn’t matter what the weather temperature or lighting is like, there’s always a way to capture something great!
