Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Galleria Grande (Large Gallery) of the monumental Royal Palace of Venaria ("Royal Hunt"). This royal residence and gardens is located near Turin in Northern Italy. The palace is noted for its monumental architecture and Baroque interiors. We roamed this palace and exhibits and later had lunch at their restaurant followed by desserts in a rooftop terrace.

Time

Our tour of the palace took many hours mid-day through late afternoon. Lots of bright light.

Lighting

The grand gallery where the photo was taken is immense and full of high doors with glass and "portholes" that allowed the space to be washed with lots of light. I first saw the gallery through curtains drawn around an end door. I could see another door at the very far end and some of the space and the beauty of its architecture. As I walked into the gallery, I was overwhelmed by its perfection as a photo subject. Although generally very bright it had lots of ornamentation and a magnificent black and white floor that reflected light from the doors.

Equipment

I used my iPhone as well as my Canon 5D Mark III camera with the camera kit 24-105mm lens. No tripod and no flash.

Inspiration

I thought that although the whole palace was clearly magnificent this gallery connecting its two towers exemplified its grandeur. I was intended in capturing the vast space especially its length as well as its height. I lost count of the many photos I took, center and non-centered. I also took photos through the door with the curtains in view as a prelude to the full room shots. I selected this photo because of its sense of space provided by the seemingly tiny door at the far end. Imagine a grand walk over from door to door.... I also was taken a back by the fabulous leading lines on the floor as well as the side walls. I believe this contributes tremendously to the shot. I also had some pics with people at the far end door but preferred the unobstructed full light. I appreciated that there were few visitors to the palace, therefore, many chances of having the space to myself. Although using people to give perspective to space is usually great, I was counting on the door at the far end to do the trick.

Editing

I did some post-processing editing to bring out details but also to washout some of the colors on the walls and ceiling frescoes. I wanted a somewhat "Black & White" feel to the overall product without shooting it or processing it as a B&W photo.

In my camera bag

I always have my iPhone with me. Additionally, my bag contains my Mark III, a 24-105mm kit lens, Sigma 105mm macro, a Canon 50mm prime lens, and a Canon 70-200mm lens, tripod, flash, etc.

Feedback

Traveling through Europe and other old world locales always provides a myriad of wonderful opportunities and challenges. Give attention to leading lines; this most of the time pays off. Explore all kinds of vantage points and angles but do not disregard a centered shot off the bat. Use objects and people to give you a sense of space. And, as always, don't be put off by some spaces that may not be as obviously stunning to your eye. As you know cameras work magic when we least expect it.
