Location
This photo was taken downtown Vancouver from the 28th floor of the Marriott Pinnacle hotel.Time
The picture was captured in the evening while there was still some traffic leaving work.Lighting
The biggest challenge with the lighting in this picture was avoiding the reflection on the window from inside the hotel room. Even with the lights out in the room, there was enough light shining into the room to create some reflections. I needed to close the curtains behind the tripod to fully darken the shot. Aside from reflective light, I exposed the image to capture long enough streams of car lights to fill the roads. Took a few test shots to settle to 30+ seconds.Equipment
The equipment that was used for this shot was a Nikon D600 with a 18-35mm wide angle lens set to 18mm with a Vanguard tripod and ball head. The picture was shot using a remote trigger.Inspiration
I can't get enough long exposure shots and when we were booked into a view room from the 28th floor I knew I had to get this shot. The location of the hotel with the surrounding buildings was perfect and we had huge windows covering the entire room so I had the choice of composition.Editing
Post processing was done in Adobe Photoshop and involved creating a black and white filter with a layer mask to reveal the colours of the light trails. Clarity and highlights were also adjusted in Lightroom. In my camera bag
My bag include a Nikon D600 with 50mm f1.8, 105mm f2.8 and a wide angle 18-35mm f3.5/4.5 lenses. I'll also carry a ND10 filter, IR filter and a circular polarizing filter. Accessories include a remote trigger, spare battery, spare SD cards and a rain cover.Feedback
Finding higher ground. I've been surprised to how many spots I've found in different cities that have great views. They sometimes come at a cost but some places offer rooftop terraces or view points open to the public. If you have a chance to book a hotel downtown ask for a room on a higher floor.
