Behind The Lens

Location

My wife's sister celebrated her birthday, and we went to greet her to her "ranch" made in mexican style. The "ranch" is standing separately and is almost lonely farmstead in middle of fields. While going there I had no idea I will make any other pictures, than just celebration. Usually I take pictures just during my vacation or kid football competitions, and this picture was from series "lets try something new".

Time

It was begining of november and sun going down very early at this time in Lithuania. I enjoyed mist all the way (300km or ~200miles) to the "Ranch" , and when we arrived it was after 8 pm and total darkness. So I had will to make some pictures with incredible weather conditions by incorporating light.

Lighting

I wanted the light to come out of the gates, and only light source I had was stationar lamp igniting from motion, so I had to act very fast not letting light to go off. It was hard to make composition as light allways went off and I had to go back and forth to make it shine. To control ammount of light I used gate door by opening it wider or narrowing, but it was hard due to strong wind. Doors also created shadows and light lines leading toward center of the frame.

Equipment

As majority of my pictures this one was shot with Nikon D5000 and 18-55mm kit lense. Of course for long exposure I've used my Benq tripod.

Inspiration

I like to watch how light plays in mist creating illusion of air glowing all around and creating uncertainty of what is going around. It was a moment I just get out of car and at the same time light ignited because of motion detector. This created special mood and I think it was impulsive that I decided to creater a picture at a very moment. As light conditions and mist tend not to change very soon, I finished my jobs and after 30 minutes gathered my gear and returned to a spot.

Editing

Most of the time I'm against heavy post processing as I like "real life" pictures, but in this case I wanted to create fairy tail feeling, so I did some heavier post processing than usual. As I taking pictures in RAW I used Adobe RAW for primary editing. In this case I reduced highlights and altered shadows to create even more smoother light view and made gate details to to come out of the dark and be more visible. After I altered saturation a little bit to accent the color of the light and croped the picture to make better composition. When in PS I made some corrections in different areas like sharpening gates and bluring background a little more. In that way I made trunks of the trees to take less attention and concentrated view on light going out of ther gates.

In my camera bag

All my equipement allways traveling with me in my Lowepro backpack. I allways can find Nikon D5000, with one of lenses on it. It could be 18-55mm Nikon kit lense or 55-300mm f4-5.6 lense. Lenses usually goes with CP filters on them. And last but not the least - cleaning kit consisting of 2-in-1 Lens Clean Pen, air blower and soft clothe.

Feedback

There is no any special technique I used in taking or postprocessing this picture. I think most was done by nature so I can advise just to wait for similar weather or try to catch it by traveling. And then you will be lucky, dont forget to use tripod.
