Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in Sydney, Australia during The Vivid Light Festival.

Time

A little bit after dusk on a chilly winters night in Sydney just experiencing all of the beautiful sights and lights sydney has to offer during the stunning light festival.

Lighting

Every year i make the trip into the city to shoot all of the light installation set ups that the creative light designers create. I love taking my camera gear and tripod and standjng back to breathe in the icy winter air and watch the people pass by without even noticing my presence. On this occasion, I waited on the boardwalk on the otherside of the harbour while shooting some fun long exposures.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 6D with a Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 lens. I used a Benro carbon fibre tripod with my gear bag holding the centre pole down for extra stability.

Inspiration

Everyone wants to capture the lights and and the projections on the operahouse sails. I wanted to use a long exposure to wipe away all of that and show the beauty and form of the sails.

Editing

Usually in post i only boost the colours and clarity a bit to extend the beauty and light in the sky and details all over the shot.

In my camera bag

My first full frame and current bidy is my Canon 6D. It is so beautiful and when on quiet mode... stunning. I love how it feels in my hands. Lenses include the old faithful Sigma 50mm f1.4, Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 & Tamron 70-200mm f2.8. Not going to lie, i freaking love this lens..(70-20mm) the bokeh and shots on 2.8 are stunning and always my favourite!

Feedback

You need patience and to be able to sjt back and observe your surroundings. Look for the light, the buildings, the beauty. Watch people and appreciate the world around you. Dream and plan and have an idea about what and how you want to create beautiful photos. On a more technical level, a steady, good quality tripod is number one weather you are shooting crop or full frame. Add a long zoom or prime to your kit and get as cropped in to the building as you can. Keep the ISO as low as you can (preferably at 100), keep you aperture narrow (ie. 16-22) to keep everything as focused as possible and then have fun with the the shutter speed. Practice and see what different and slower shutter speeds do to the light and the water and the sky. I usually use between 15-30 seconds. It makes the water as smooth as ice!
