Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. A few Cadets from Army West Point and a few Midshipmen from the Naval Academy spend one semester of their senior year at the other institution. As such, the West Point Cadets in their Grey and whites look out of place against the Navy Blue of the Midshipmen. I was able to capture one of the Cadets marching with his Naval brethren coming off the parade field.

Time

This was taken late afternoon, after marching on field.

Lighting

Nothing about lighting, but the angle forced me to shoot from my belly, while laying upon the sidewalk as they marched by.

Equipment

Canon 7D, with a 24-105mm zoom.

Inspiration

While there is intense rivalry between the two service academies, they are still brothers-in-arms and so respect the uniform worn by their opposites from the other academy.

Editing

No post processing, shot in shutter priority.

In my camera bag

I normally carry my Canon 7D, my 24-105mm zoom, a flashpoint speedlight, a remote trigger, and some gels for the speedlight, two bungee cords and a platypod pro plate and ball head to either use with my camera it I don't have a tripod, or for the remote flash for fill.

Feedback

Our son attended the Naval Academy, so I was familiar with the back story of the different uniforms. I a sea of 4,000 Midshipmen, the 5-10 Cadets truly stand out. I just needed to have one march at the end of the row, since they march 6 across, to a Cadet in the middle wouldn't have worked.
