Location
I took this photo in the middle of my backyard in early May.Time
Middle of the afternoon, I believe it was around 4PM.Lighting
The lighting is completely natural. I don't particularly like to use artificial lighting in my photography. All of the lighting effects you see here is just elements of a lucky shot. I was at the mercy of the sun.Equipment
Nikon D5100 and my Nikkor 85mm micro telephoto lens.Inspiration
I was just getting the hang of using the lens. It was a difficult lens to use, but I was starting to enjoy it. I walked around my backyard just snapping every flower (including dandelions) that I passed. While it was fun, I wasn't getting any photos I could be proud of. Then, I passed a dandelion with a bee on it. Normally, I would run the other way because I'm allergic and bees scare me. I was curious how my lens would perform though, resulting in this photo.Editing
I didn't have to do much. I just lightened it a bit using the website iPiccy by adjusting the contrast and exposure, and I altered the shadows by making them slightly darker. It is an unnoticeable difference from the original image, but I'm happier with the way it looks now.In my camera bag
Two camera bodies (Nikon D5100 and Nikon D7000), Nikon 85mm micro telephoto lens, Nikon 18-55mm kit lens, Nikon 55-200mm zoom lens, and a 18-105mm Nikon kit lens.Feedback
Don't be afraid to rely on natural light. Especially if there is yellow involved in your image. I absolutely love how sunlight looks against anything and everything yellow. You just have to have a basic knowledge of when exactly is the best time during the day to take the photo you want to achieve. Different times of day can set different tones for your image. Experiment and see when is the best for you. Originally, I thought my favorite time of day to shoot would be early morning when the sun is just beginning to rise. I've always gazed fondly at photos taken during that time, but alas it was not meant to be. I could never convey the right mood. I soon realized that my best time is closer to sunset, when the light is less harsh and a lot more golden. Also, even if you feel like you hate a certain lens (we've all been there), give it a chance! I hated my 85mm micro telephoto so much at first. I refused to use it. After giving it a chance and learning how to use it properly, it has become my absolute favorite lens. I won't go anywhere without it. Just keep that in mind.
