Location
This photo was taken near a pond in Cypress, Texas. I was out trying to get shots of some mallard ducks when i noticed this squirrel. He seemed quite interested in what i was doing.Time
This was mid-afternoon.Lighting
I had planned on getting to the location much earlier, when the light would be softer, but something came up and i was not able to get there until mid-afternoon. It was a clear day and the light was pretty harsh, but i noticed when he started coming down the tree, he would be in shade. What saved the photo was the shade from the tree he was climbing.Equipment
This was shot using a Nikon D3100. hand held, F5.6 @ 270mm. ISO 100.Inspiration
This was one of those spur of the moment shots. The ducks i was attempting to shoot were not being very cooperative that day. I had been there for a while and noticed him earlier way up at the top of the tree. He eventually came down for a better look, which brought him eye level and into the shade. I was able to just turn around and shoot.Editing
Very little post-processing. Adjusted the exposure a little and cropped. In my camera bag
I usually keep a Nikon D600 and a Nikon D7000 as a spare. A 50 mm 1.8, 85 mm 3.5 and a 70-300 4.5-5.6, along with the 18-55 mm kit lens. Since i favor outdoor shots, the 70-300 has become my go to lens. Always carry extra battery and cards. If i need a tripod, i will pack my manfrotto carbon fiber or use a carbon fiber monopod.Feedback
I had planned on shooting mallard ducks that day. Sitting there waiting for the right shots, i looked around and noticed this squirrel in a tree behind me. He was too high in the tree for a decent shot, but i kept an eye on him and he eventually came down and i was able to get this shot. Always be aware of your surroundings. I never did get a decent shot of the ducks that day, but i was pretty happy to get this guy.
