This was actually taken at the Houston zoo. I like the challenge of getting a shot at the zoo that does not look like a zoo.Time
I always try to get there at opening, so around 10 am.Lighting
It was a pretty cloudy day. It was pretty dark, which made it difficult to get the right exposure, but it made the light soft.Equipment
I used a Nikon D810 with a Nikon 70-300mm lens. No tripod or monopod, just handheld.Inspiration
I find most zoos are not really photographer friendly, people, fencing, walls, etc... but I like to go there to practice. I enjoy the variety of animals and the challenge of overcoming the obstacles to get a nice shot.Editing
I use Lightroom. As stated earlier, the lighting was kind of a challenge that day. The clouds were moving and the light would get really dark, then lighten a little. On this photo, I increased the exposure a little, backed down some of the shadows and increased the contrast just a touch. In my camera bag
I carry a Nikon D810 and D600. My main lens is a Nikon 70-300mm, but i also carry a 50mm, 24-70mm, 85mm macro and the 18-55mm kit lens. I also carry a SB900 flash. Depending on my plans, i carry either a monopod or tripod.Feedback
Wildlife photography is a challenge. I use the zoo to practice, but getting out and finding animals in their natural habitat requires quite a bit. Plan ahead and learn as much as you can about whatever you are trying to photograph. Learn habits and habitat. Where you are likely to find what you are looking for. There is a lot of walking and climbing involved, so be physically fit. Remember to be safe. Some animals are really unpredictable, so use a long lens and try not to disturb. Most importantly, be patient. Animals do not cooperate, lol. Wait for the shot you want.
