Location
This photo was taken at Flinders in Victoria Australia at a lookout I visit often which is near the beach, it’s a dark location to capture the night sky.Time
This photo was one of many I’d taken in the pure dark on 21/07/2023 at around 9:15pm. There was zero light pollution and the Milky Way was saying hello.Lighting
This location is very dark. I was controlling the camera without additional lighting, mainly by feel and although I knew I’d captured the sky, it wasn’t until I got home I saw the photos on my laptop I could see the detail.Equipment
I have a Canon 5D mark IV camera with a lens 24-105mm and I use an older model Manfrotto tripod I was given on my 21st birthday, which has had some of the handles chewed by a previous dog of mine lol, but it still works great. I need to invest in a wide angle lens for the night sky next.Inspiration
The sky looked amazing. On this particular night, there was no moon, and there was no cloud. I guess I just got lucky with the location, time of night and the weather conditions. When the moon rose though, that was it, then it was time to go home, just too bright. Not many places are dark enough to capture the sky, but I’m lucky enough that I found this location.Editing
Nope. I always try to keep my photos as they are in their original form, other than cropping, that’s about it.In my camera bag
I have a dedicated camera bag with my lenses, head torch, snacks, safety stuff and one of the best pieces of equipment I’ve bought is a hands-free shutter cable. It makes life so much easier. I have a lens warmer by Neewer, you can wrap it around your lens to prevent fog on cold nights. Also, I bought a heap of extra batteries as you never want to be with a flat battery when there’s a great photo opportunity.Feedback
Have patience. One thing I have learnt is no matter your enthusiasm, there’s a few things that must fall into place for you to capture a great photo. One being the weather, the clouds, especially and the moon. Sometimes it’s amazing and sometimes it just doesn’t work. I’m no expert, I’m still learning myself, but I just keep trying new locations and experimenting with the settings on my camera to capture a great photo.
