Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my pool in the desert Southwest a few years ago. A simple black sheet sunk in the pool provided a back drop with bricks holding down the corners for the energetic model who is amazing....

Time

As I mentioned in my other underwater photo and description, I had a small window of direct afternoon sunlight hitting this end of the pool in late September and the model was late adding to my angst and the water was cold

Lighting

Because I had my pride and joy in a Outex cover ( They have amazing, easy to use products and I had complete faith that my camera would be ok) and an attached Canon flash set at 1/4 power, I hoped that the available light from the afternoon sun would give me enough light to capture her with enough fill to give me some catch light in her eyes...

Equipment

Canon 5D Mk III, Canon 24-105, Canon flash and Outex housing, a weight belt and male bravado

Inspiration

As this shot was from a few years ago, Laurel and I had a plan that day on what we wanted to accomplish. They were a little elaborate and we accomplished them. I posted them but like anything else, I had to revisit that shoot and look again at some of the 400 shots we took. As I try to move my work forward, I find that this kind of shot, taken as a grab shot, now exemplifies what I need to be doing with my work. The casual " look for it moment", while harder to capture, sometimes produces the image I want.

Editing

This shot looks best in B and W. Cropped in Lightroom and then just Curves in PS, conversion to black and white then some sharpening for the bubbles. The relative wide angle didn't help her nose but any adjustment would have defeated my purpose of trying to keep it natural.

In my camera bag

Normal stuff in my bag. Canon 5D Mk III, 24-70, 80-210.

Feedback

Take the plunge. The water was cold, the model had amazing enthusiasm and endurance and I wanted to stop before she did but I'm glad I ponied up. Brave I know... Never hesitate to go back and review what you have shot. I don't think I ever have a finished product, as my moods are reflective of what I want to convey at present time. I don't think there is a law that says you can't revisit. Maybe I'm smarter now. Or maybe not....but as I get older I think I see better...
