Beautiful image. Love the use of artificial lighting on the rocks, and the night sky, it’s inspirational.

I was shown the idea on a photo tour in the Grand Canyon. I have a light panel which I switch on for about 1-3 seconds in a 30 second exposure.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at "The Pinnacles Desert" north of Perth Western Australia.

Time

I was about 9pm at night with no clouds, you could see some light pollution in the background, otherwise it was quite dark.

Lighting

The lighting was done using a lightpanel. I got the idea from a photo shoot I did in the Grand Canyon. I light up areas for a matter of 1-2 seconds then moved to different locations over a 30 second exposure period.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D610 with a Tamron 15-30mm lens on a tripod and using a battery powered light panel.

Inspiration

The idea started in the US from a trip I had. I was introduce to astro photography and wanted to try out some of those ideas when I got home. I had planned to do this at the Pinnacles for sometime and this was my first opportunity.

Editing

I did not post-processing in lightroom to bring out the milky way.

In my camera bag

I have a pelican case which I bring everything I need. The case is the size you can take onboard a plane. I carry my tripod, a selection of lenses - 105mm macro, 15-30mm Tamron, 28-270mm Tamron, 50mm prime, Alpine Labs Pulse device to control exposure and remote control of the camera, spare battery and the camera. The light panel I carry separatly which is a 270 led panel.

Feedback

Patients, with the long exposures and setup of each shot it won't get as many shots off that you would think. But its fun. Lenses with F2.8 and bigger are good to get a hold of and lately I have found the cost of hiring these wide angle and wider Fstop lense which you may not use for much other than this type of shooting is great. I feel you need to put either a silhouette of the landscape to base the photo. Lots of people are putting people in the shot with a torch. Work a try.
