This massive thunderhead presented itself during golden hour for the perfect amount of illumination. This storm was probably more than 30 miles away at the time, but from my vantage point at 8,500' I was able to have the drop on it and bring it much closer.

Behind The Lens

Location

Just a short hike from my campsite, I scaled up an outcropping of boulders for a better vantage point to shoot this monster cumulonimbus. The cloud was in prime form as I got into position and executed the frame seen here.

Time

Right at twilight with a little sun still illuminating my subject.

Lighting

It's all natural, as is almost always the case with landscape photographs. Survey the desired scene, watch your surroundings carefully, and be patient for the right moment to capture the shot.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3400 and a nikkor 70-300mm lens, shot at 70mm, no lens filter. Simple setup.

Inspiration

I love clouds and especially large thunderheads like this one, so I am always on the lookout for the perfect one to take shape. They're so grand and magical. One of my favorite things is watching them from the mountains as they roll onto the plains, the added bonus being a monster like this, pulsing with lightning just after sunset.

Editing

Color and texture enhancements to make it pop.

In my camera bag

Nowadays I carry my Nikon D850, and my Tamron SP 15-30 and 24-70 for hikes like this.

Feedback

This shot was captured utilizing a great vantage point of the storm from a hilltop at 8,500' elevation. It changes the perspective to one where you're not looking up at the storm, but more across at it from a huge distance.
