Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home studio… the place I retreat to when I want to create and escape from the world at large for a while.

Time

I find afternoons are when my creative juices flow the freest.

Lighting

During lockdown in 2020, I decided that it was time to finally learn off-camera flash. I work with a Profoto A1X and octagon soft box, and love it!

Equipment

Canon 7d MarkII Canon 100mm macro Lens Profoto A1X + Profoto Connect Homemade backdrop created from 2 artists canvases painted black Neewer 5600k dimmable light

Inspiration

These Anastasia Green Chrysanthemums caught my eye as I walked into the supermarket to do my groceries. They were so unusual! I’m a fan of the ‘power of 3’ also, and knew that the 3 blooms together would look amazing.

Editing

I used Mastin Labs presets. This image is processed with the Porta preset. I will adjust white balance, exposure and clarity until I am happy with the final result, which to be honest is usually not a lot as I love to nail an image in camera. My final step is to add a dark vignette so direct focus to the flowers.

In my camera bag

My Canon 7d MarkII, with a sniper strap - so comfortable to wear and easy to grab! Canon 100mm macro lens for my flower work. Canon 24-70 lens for everyday walking around. Canon 50mm lens for portrait photos.

Feedback

Don’t be afraid to learn off-camera flash! While the learning curve is initially steep, once you start to play with it you will love it!! Also, don’t be discouraged by your first images. Take notes off your settings. If it’s terrible (which it probably will be!) adjust, shoot again, move your flash, shoot again… rinse and repeat until you get the look you are after. Persevere! You’ll be glad you did!!
