The castle of Acquafredda stands on top of a volcanic cone, not far from the inhabited area of Siliqua. Its imposing ruins dominate the Cixerri valley. Its name probably derives from a source of fresh water that still flows from the rocky ravines today.
Tradition attributes the construction of the castle to the counts of Gherardesca, in the person of the famous Ugolino mentioned in Dante's Hell. Although there is no sure documentary evidence, the fortification system can be placed in the second half of the thirteenth century.
