Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Ashtamudi Lake of Kollam, Kerala, India.

Time

This photo was taken just before the noon, on a sunny day. Lot of birds hover over this lake, for a delicious meal. I was sitting in the shades of a tree, closely watching the activity of the birds. I captured several shots for an hour, as the birds flew around, this one being the best.

Lighting

Being a sunny day, the sun was a great natural source of light. Everything around me was brilliantly lit up. However, I wanted the background to be darkish, since the bird was in hues of white. This would give me a good contrast. I was playing around with shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings. Finally, I used a shutter speed of 1/4000 sec, with aperture being f/5.6 and ISO-100, to create the mood of contrast in my photo.

Equipment

This was shot with my Nikon D5300 Camera, using a 70-300mm f4.5-5 lens

Inspiration

I absolutely love capturing birds. I identify spots, with birds around and spend a lot of time, observing and capturing their movements and behaviors.

Editing

I just did the basic post-processing such as adjusting the contrast, exposure etc.

In my camera bag

My camera bag is always equipped with my Nikon D5300, a telephoto lens (Nikon 70-300mm), a macro lens and a wide angle lens (Nikon 18-55mm). And this bag goes with me, wherever I go!

Feedback

Wildlife photography is very interesting and challenging. One needs to be patient, observant and wait for the right moment. Animals, birds etc are extremely expressive. A captivating expression is one of the aspects of a good photograph. Take as many shots as you can and select the best. Try capturing from different angles, experiment with camera settings, be creative!
