Behind The Lens

Location

Taken in British Columbia Canada. Still one of those few spots in the world where nature has a strong foothold.

Time

Although Owls are the quintessential night creatures, in reality risks are ever present and to survive one has to be ever watchful.

Lighting

One element that makes this work is the position... usually the photographer is looking up at the bird. Here the view is more or less at the same elevation... slightly below which retains the birds dominance... and almost even which presents a out of the ordinary perspective. Though the light is clearly from above there is a a brighter spot in the chest 'over brightening' the white feathers and giving the illusion of under-lighting.

Equipment

Sony NEX-7

Inspiration

Any time you can capture the beauty of nature and its creatures take it.

Editing

There is minor cropping on the right so as to give more relative space on the left. This make the image less static and adds an element of mystery to the moment. Normally I would have cropped this way in camera... but in the excitement of the chance I made it to centered... One can never train enough...

In my camera bag

I travel light (hence the NEX-7) ... wide zoom and a macro... various small tools, reflectors, batteries.

Feedback

The primary reason this works is that it is 'different' Owls are always seen as watching you (for good reason)... here we see a side/angle out of the ordinary... that's it!
