Behind The Lens

Location

I took this at River Bends Park in Shelby Township, MI. There is a nature center that has beautiful meadows and fields.

Time

This was a Senior Photo Session so I wanted to use the evening light. This was close to the middle-end of the session so time would be around 4:30pm. I should also note, that this was the first weekend in October in the Detroit Metro Area of Michigan.

Lighting

The sun was still up pretty high for the time of day and season. I was trying to achieve a backlight effect so my model would have a sort of glow to her. I made sure to stay close the the ground and shoot a little bit up to get the light just right. I also had a reflector to bounce some light on her face because it was quite dark from the backlighting from the sun.

Equipment

I used my Sony A58 with the kit zoom lens 70mm-200mm. No flash, as I usually like natural light. I did use a 4ft x 5ft reflector behind me about 10 to 15 feet away. Honestly have no idea how far away my reflector was, I had my Model's father hold it and told him to continue move backwards until it reached the perfect light. I wanted to light up my model's face and get some sort of catchlight.

Inspiration

My Model told me she likes "Dirty Pretty" as in, rugged but neat. I love how the tall grasses looked and I thought it would be a great interest point. I also wanted depth for her Senior Shoot to make her feel immersed in the field of grasses. This is one of my favorite shots from the session.

Editing

Since this was a Senior Photo Session I did some post-processing using Corel Paintshop Pro v6 (very similar to photoshop). I brightened her face up more and skin smoothed with some blemish control.

In my camera bag

ALWAYS A SONY! I love, love, LOVE my Sony cameras. I currently have my Sony A58 along with kit lens and my prime 50mm.

Feedback

If you would like try something similar to this photograph go to an empty field with semi long grasses or weeds, about a foot tall will do. Light should be the evening hours so the warmer light is peaking. Depending on location, this could vary in the time of day. Summer time, 7pm or later. If in the Fall, the time I took this photograph, time would be closer to 4pm or later. Have your model sit in the middle of the field, or grassy area with the sun off to the side behind the model. Play with the light behind the subject by moving yourself until you get how you want your shot. I used my kit 70mm-200mm lens. I was about 20 feet away from my Model. Also, if your Model's face is too dark, I recommend using a reflector to bounce back some light on their face. I used a large reflector with the golden side that was about 40 feet away from my Model. As far as camera placement, make sure you are ground level or slightly higher so you are shooting thru the grasses. I took 4 different looks until I landed with this photograph. Have fun
