The lighting and color are beautiful but composition somewhat predictable. Would like to see more of your work...and elements of surprise. Best.

Behind The Lens

Location

We went to a bed and breakfast in a farm near the city of St Thomas. This was a great experience as we had all these farm animals around us and it just created many opportunities for images. Everything looked like a painting.

Time

This was early evening, after the golden hour and just before the blue hour, which gives the purple hue in the sky. The animals do become more calm at this time and it allows for plenty of time to compose and refocus.

Lighting

The purple hue on the sky started to reflect on the mule white skin/fur. It created an amazing pink fairy tale look, and if it had a horn, I would have capture the first ever image of a unicorn.

Equipment

A Canon 5D MKII with a Zeiss 85mm 1.4 prime lens, handheld. (I just love the colors you can get with e Zeiss lens)

Inspiration

It was the end of the day and we were heading back for dinner. I was trying to get a good sunset image, when I notice the mule was also looking at the sunset. It just looked right and I end up ignoring the sunset.

Editing

I use Lightroom most of the time. It was used to bring up the saturation of the green grass and pink colors.

In my camera bag

Now a Canon EOS-R (replaced the 5D which I still have it as a second camera), a 50mm 1.4 Sigma Art lens, the 85mm 1.4 Zeiss and a Canon 100-400 ( version I) and a Fujifilm X100s.

Feedback

Walk a lot to get familiar to your surroundings and try to capture images during different times of the day to understand the changes on the light. Travel also helps as it forces you to see new place with fresh eyes. Try not to disturb and harass animals for a "good" pictures. You can never predict how they will react. If you need to get close, think in investing in a longer lens.
