Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from a high peak on Treasure Island which is a small piece of property between Oakland and San Francisco that used to house a navel base in the 30s - just recently.

Time

Shot around 5:30 AM during the beginning of the blue hour and right before the golden hour.

Lighting

The sun had not shown its face quite yet but the sky was casting this beautiful blue, pink and purple as the back drop to the lighted bridge.

Equipment

Using my Nikon D7000 on a tripod with my 18-200mm lens shot on a long exposure 30"

Inspiration

This is a historical photo now. The old dark bridge is the one I grew up with. Many trips to and from the East Bay to San Francisco. The old structure was awaiting the long arduous process of being disassembled after the new beautiful suspension bridge was completed and now the new traffic pathway. I felt that this shot showed the essence of transformation. The old bridge has now been completely removed so this is a great capture and reminder of this transition in time for all us native Northern Californians.

Editing

I did a small crop on the left end of the photo and added some exposure to increase the light in the sky. The color was just to beautiful to keep it too dark.

In my camera bag

Nikon D7000 and my favorite walk around lens Nikon 18-200mm, and just added a sigma wide angle 10-29mm. Also have a Sony A7 with a 28-70mm walk around lens and a Rokinon 14mm. Nd filters static and variable. Good tripod and a remote and a cable release.

Feedback

Scout the area for your shot. Determine what you are trying to convey to the viewer. Try different angles and possibilities to compose the scene. Don't be static move your feet and tripod. After you get the shot you came for, be sure to look up, down, left, right, front, and back so you don't miss a possible shot you weren't planning on. You never know what may catch your eye. If you are not familiar with long exposure, read or watch any information you can find on the subject then practice, practice, practice. Try the shot on a variety of exposure times. Shoot during the blue or golden hour start early and stay after to make sure you capture all possible shots. And lastly, have fun and embrace the amazing experience of photography.
