Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in the downtown core of Toronto at the building called the Gooderham building or the Flatiron. The spot is actually one of the most photographed places in Toronto and pops up at least once in every Toronto based instagrammer's feed.. At this point I was still trying to master the art of photography and was inspired by a few people to do night long exposures, and since I was close by here I took the shot.

Time

This picture was taken a few hours after sun down, it might have been around 7:00 pm since rush hour was still going on and since it was November it got dark pretty early. My friend and I were walking around the city for almost 7 hours that day doing street photography, so I decided to pack light. Meaning no tripod and a few extra batteries. By that point I have already done a few gorilla style long exposures throughout the day, one was in the Eaton Center having the camera rested on a railing and a trash can and others on the side walk, now I was feeling a little confident in placing my camera in precarious places. So I had my Sony A7 setup on a newspaper dispenser and had my wallet to prop up lens a little. As an afterthought that could've been a very expensive robbery if someone decided to walk by.

Lighting

When I got to the intersection, I knew this was going to be the most Toronto shot I will be taking. Because I wanted to show as much as the city as possible I initially had it setup on a traffic island with the point of the building in the middle of the frame and traffic on both sides. However I forgot that the traffic lights doesnt work that way. They will only allow East and West bound to move separately, which would make one side of the frame with light streaks and one dark. So I decided to shift over to the South East side of the intersection (what you see in the picture) and to get elevation I put my camera on a newspaper stand. Inadvertently I had a momentarily parked car on the right of my frame, but because the exposure was long enough the driver was able to drive away leaving the back contour of the vehicle illuminated by oncoming traffic headlights.

Equipment

Sony A7, 28-70 kit lens and a wallet to prop up the lens.

Inspiration

When I started out I was infatuated with the whole instagram scene of "GameOfTones" or "Lit/Clean/Fire" style of editing. The whole roof topping and night long exposures seemed so amazing to do.

Editing

I usually do small lightroom edits. At the time I was very infatuated with the whole "Game Of Tones" or "Lit/Clean/Fire" instagram style of editing, but I never knew how to do it. I eventually gave up and decided to edit to my own satisfaction and this was the first of many pictures I learned to edit.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Sony a7 28-70 kit lens, and the mitakon 85 f2 with ef- fe adapter. I usually bring my mefoto travel tripod only if I plan to use it, most of the time its at home. I do plan on getting the 35mm and a 50mm prime as well.

Feedback

One main thing that everyone should keep in mind is be patient. When I started out I was shutter shy where I would limit the amount of time for me to have the camera to my face and take pictures. But I soon realized, no one cares what you do. Most of the time even if you take a picture of a person and they know they would just ignore you and go on with their day. So, dont be scared slow down frame it right, make sure its in focus, and adjust your settings accordingly.
