This image is a stack of 5 hours worth of exposures of Torreys peak out of Bakersville Colorado. I had 5 layers of clothes on inside of a -40 degree sleeping bag to stay warm through the night. This was shot in the late fall at around 12,000 feet in elevation under a full moon. There was constant 30-50 mph wind with gusts over 70, which required me to anchor my tripod legs under piles of rocks. I was very happy that I captured the meteorite as the bright flash was so intense that it startled me and woke me up.

Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this image at Bakersville Colorado, from the side of a mountain at12,000' in elevation.

Time

This image was shot from around midnight until sunrise. It is a 5 hour exposure.

Lighting

This was shot on a full moon, no artificial lighting.

Equipment

Shot with a Canon 7D.

Inspiration

My love for this mountain and the beautiful night sky were my motivational factors to create this image

Editing

Of course I did. First off I shoot in RAW format with no presets so the images come strait out of the camera very flat and dull. There is no way I could have shot this as a single image during this phase of the moon. I batch edited all of the images, then stacked them. I then did another final touch edit on the stacked image.

In my camera bag

10-20, 50, & 85mm lenses, sturdy tripod and head, programmable intervolometer, off camera small system flash(es) and wireless triggers. Also a dual battery grip and lots of batteries.

Feedback

Be ready for cold weather. Plan around clear nights. It is a long and lonely process best honed in a friendly environment. Practice shooting startrail both as long (1 hour plus) single exposures, and shorter (30 seconds to 45 minutes) exposures to stack. Once you have a good idea how it works location and moon phase become key.
