I just wanted to leave a quick note to say thank you for participating in my "Portraits on Location" challenge. While I chose another photo as the winner, this one was in my final 100 favorites out of a field that was just shy of 2000 entries.

Melvin has a soft and kindly face and you've captured him perfectly. He would be proud of his portrait!

Behind The Lens

Location

Melvin's photo was made in the gulf of mexico.

Time

The image was made during the period of noontime, however, because of the strong sunlight, I had asked Melvin to stand in the doorway of the shipping terminal.

Lighting

Lighting during the noon hour in the port of Houston was strong and the weather was hot and humid. I asked Melvin to stand in the doorway to the shipping terminal. This gave me a direction to the light, and also provided my subject with a cooler environment. Sometimes you do not have the luxury of choice, and have to think about how to visual light and subject.

Equipment

I used a 6x7 Pentax, Bogen tripod with a 3 way tilt head, and Tri-X film.

Inspiration

Melvin and the workers in this area inspired me to make photographs. The weather was hot and humid. The men and women working were drenched in sweat. I feel privileged to be able to get their permission to photograph them.

Editing

No post. I did some burning and dodging, and increased the time in the developer.

In my camera bag

My camera of choice is my Zone 6 modified Wista, with a long and short lens. My pentax spot meter and a variety of filters. On the digital end, I use a Nikon D850 with an 18 to 35 lens. I also use a gitzo tripod with a 3 way head.

Feedback

When photographing folks in this type of environment, get to know them by chatting with them. Ask questions about the area and their work. See if you could get their permission to photograph them, and also ask them if they can introduce you to some of their fellow workers. Also, pack a bunch of T shirts. I drenched 3 of mine before noon, changing when I could.
