Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Texas while I was visiting my family there about a year ago. I always have my camera out when I am there and when I saw the light from the fire I knew I had to take the shot.

Time

I took this pretty late at night. My uncle had made a huge bonfire and I was walking around taking pictures of the family.

Lighting

I was simply just taking casual photos of family and friends, but I walked by my aunt and saw the light hitting her face. I got a different shot initially, but after repositioning myself I was able to get this amazing silhouette of her and it is one of my favorite shots to this day.

Equipment

I actually took this with a Canon Rebel T2i and a 50mm 1.8 lens. I took this a while ago when I was fist getting into photography so I did not have my Canon 60D yet, but the T2i still gets great quality shots.

Inspiration

Luckily this photo happened spontaneously and just in the moment which is one of my favorite things about it.

Editing

I love photoshop and I am certified in it so I tend to edit a lot of my photos, but the lighting was actually perfect from the initial raw shot that I did not really need to edit it in any way. The only adjustment I made was boosting the contrast a but to bring up the blacks and create a deeper silhouette.

In my camera bag

Now I mainly use my Canon 60D, but still carry my T2i as a backup. I also usually bring along my Canon Rebel 2000 film camera for specific shoots. I always have my 50mm and 35mm on me as well. Primes are always essential. I always bring my 18-135 zoom lens as well.

Feedback

The best advice I can give is to always have a camera with you. Even the camera on the iPhone takes great pictures and if you see something that is worth taking a picture of, use whatever you got. The more practice, the better.
