Behind The Lens

Location

Spartan Race at Reveille Peak Ranch, outside of Burnet, TX.

Time

9:20 AM

Lighting

Just bright daylight with few clouds.

Equipment

Nikon D5100 with a Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VRII lens, handheldh.

Inspiration

The army crawl section was awesome: barbed wire over a dirt field with raised humps and troughs, and someone with a hose dumping water nonstop on the area. Lots of mud! I loved watching the different techniques used by the race participants, and just tried to get shots of them so that I could see their face. In this image everything just came together: water, mud, position and expression.

Editing

Lightroom and Photoshop with Topaz Labs Clarity, with some high-pass filter sharpening to finish.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D5100, Tamron lens, and a 105MM f/2.8 macro lens, SB600 Speedlite, and wireless remotes.

Feedback

The long lens was absolutely crucial for this event; I wouldn't use anything less than 200mm even though I was within a few yards of the racers at some events. I think the facial expressions are the best part of something like this, so a zoom is key. Also, the racers move fast; it's important to move around to find the best angle for each shot.
