Location
This photo was take in the water shed just out side Camrose Alberta ( Canada ) I do not know the name of the lake......The water shed holds a abundance of wild life all over the province of Alberta......Time
The province of Alberta is under a big sky...I grew up in the east cost under a much smaller sky..... Different light different temperature...My field of photography is studio, location and weddings.... Almost always I control the lighting..... I am still learning how to capture a beautiful frame with natural light... I some times use a polarizing filter .I did not have my filter on this day..... Sun was high in the sky around two pm.....Lighting
It is not by choice that I shoot in early afternoon.... I find under a big sky this time of day the lighting is still hard lighting....When wild life presents its self I can not resist the chance to at least capture a good shot before the moment flees/ ( this was not a planned shoot) ( it was a stop the car , let me out moment ) Shooting in manual gives me more control over out door lighting .....also a lens hood can help....I used neither this day....Equipment
This day I shooting with my EOS 40 D Canon ( a heavy camera , with a great grip ) My lens was a canon zoom EF 75 - 300mm 1:4 - 5.6.....Hand held ...holding my breath counting my heart beat pressing the shutter in between the beats to keep my focus sharp and steady.....Inspiration
A flock of American Avocet ....in a wilderness setting... Some on the water some in the air.....a perfect opportunity to capture one in flight .....The challenge to attempt that perfect timing a split second when your eye your camera your finger on the shutter all work together to capture the flight, when it enters the frame of your lens......Editing
I cropped the photo to make my image appear larger in the frame.... I used canon software to drop my lighting down one stop to give my sky a little more blue.....In my camera bag
EOS 70 D Canon/ heavy ,With a sure grip...... A work horse when in the field .... Canon EOS 40D , love the big grip on this camera.....It is heavy , gives me a secure feeling that I have a solid piece of equipment in my hands, that will work with me to give me the best results..... Canon Zoom EOS 18 - 135 mm..... lens and a Canon zoom 75 - 300mm lensFeedback
Be patient , use a fast lens, keep both eyes open to time your subject, Tripod ,mount & stabilizers are great tools. If hand held camera keep your hands as still as you can holding your breath will help to keep your body still. A fast shutter speed helps 1/ 1000 sec or faster , and a lot of luck....I am in no way a pro on nature photography , I respect the rules / but admit I am also a bit of a rebel when it comes to the rules .....I will always strive for that wow shot ! Study and learn from the masters who have perfected the art ! Have fun, put your soul in it, keep trying to get it right, for one day you will !
