Behind The Lens

Location

I took this one on the boardwalk in Asbury Park, New Jersey, right before the area across from The Stone Pony, on one of our nightly dog walks.

Time

It was taken around 11 pm, give or take.

Lighting

It had just stopped raining and it was very foggy out, adding a really moody tone to that early summers night.

Equipment

I simply used the camera on my phone, a Samsung galaxy S23.

Inspiration

I noticed the misty haze creating some very interesting and mysterious cones of light that added some really cool features to the background lights and shadows...

Editing

My first shot seemed mundane, so I switched it to black and white, and voila, I came up with this, which I was more than pleased with.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Cannon 7D, with a 18-55mm f 1.8, and a flash with a light box diffuser, but on my dog walks, it is a lot easier to use my phone.

Feedback

It's not about using the best, and most expensive equipment, it's about knowing how to use the equipment you have, and always look for ways to add some extreme foreground, as well as including some staggered lighting in the background, at least in your landscape shots, this will allow the story you are telling with your lens to feel fuller, and more robust, as if you were able to add a lead-in paragraph and fully describe the whole frame with great poetic detail.
