Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken on the Bonneville Salt Flats, east of Wendover, Utah. The Salt Flats are known for world land speed records, but they are also a favorite of photographers.Time
It was shot on September 7, 2019 at 3:49 pm, Mountain Daylight Time.Lighting
The lighting was natural light. The salt makes for a great natural reflector.Equipment
Nikon D850, Nikkor AF-SVR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED at 95mm. ISO 125. Shutter speed 1/3200. Aperture f/4.0. Handheld. No flash.Inspiration
This was part of a Wasatch Camera Club Photo Shoot. It provided the models. This model is Julia Wright. She came prepared to dance on pointe. It was a matter of capturing the right moment. She provided many of them The Salt Flats provided inspiration. There is lots of "distance" available, plenty of opportunity to be creative.Editing
I process my RAW images with DxO PhotoLab. This was version 2. I'm now on version 3. Smartlighting was in the auto mode. I used a feature that spot weights the face. The setting that seemed best was "slight." I slightly reduced the intensity of white and black (255 to 232 and 0 to 15) The image is not cropped. It displays as framed in camera. I also use Corel Painshop Pro for post processing, but don't recall using it on this image. In my camera bag
My camera bag contains my Nikon D850, a Nikkor 28-300mm zoom (my Swiss Army Knife lens), a Nikkor 85mm f/1.4, a Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 (the one used here), and a Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8. Of course there are also extra batteries, memory cards, lens cloth, etc.Feedback
Look for places with good natural lighting and nothing distracting in the background. Find a model who loves to dance and is comfortable in front of the camera.
