Location
This Red Deer stag was taken in Richmond Park, UK, during the rutting season (September/October).Time
This shot was taken in the morning, before the Sun got too high. First you have to find the stags, then seize the opportunity and make the most of the light available;Lighting
I wanted the natural day lighting from the side to emphasise the antlers, so endeavoured to get a dark background. I couldn’t ask the animal to pose, so had to be patient and wait for him to oblige, without alarming it.Equipment
I used a Nikon D300s with a Sigma 120-400mm zoom, handheld, as I am on the move most of the time tracking the animals.Inspiration
I have always enjoyed taking photographs of animals and birds of all kinds and and the challenge of getting a stag in the rutting season inspired me to venture into the park where the animals roam free.Editing
The photograph was opened in Photoshop and minor adjustments made to highlights and shadows. I don’t like to fiddle around too much and prefer to keep things natural. In my camera bag
I have used Nikon equipment for the last 12 years and now use a Nikon Z 9 with a Z 100-400mm lens for my wildlife photography, which allows me to keep some distance between the animals and birds, without disturbing them. The zoom is great quality and gives me the opportunity to compose the shot better.Feedback
Photographing animals requires much patience and watching and waiting is the main part of the job. Speed and anticipation is also necessary in capturing that moment that may only happen in a moment and then lost forever. One is always hoping to catch unusual moments, but planning a shot in advance is also useful. Have the shot visualised in your head before you take it.
